Teaching German in the Heart of Europe.

As an instructor of German as Foreign Language at the private language school Deutschakademie I taught groups of 5-10 people utilizing diverse and modern teaching techniques. Besides the group courses, I also led company organized classes with an emphasis on professional vocabulary and language skills and provided assistance and support in the form of counseling (including challenges with cultural integration, the job market, and everyday life in Vienna).

Teaching German in Texas.

As a Graduate Part-Time Instructor of German at Texas Tech University I taught the levels 1501, 1502, 2301, 2302. Throughout my service I completed the “Online Instructor Training: A practical guide to preparing online courses and teaching online” and demonstrated mastery over the abilities to:

  • Articulate reasons why and how online teaching and learning is a viable alternative to the traditional classroom.

  • Identify best instructional practices in the online learning environment and articulate tips for student success in online courses.

  • Request a course development shell in a Learning Management System (LMS), perform basic functions in an LMS as well as use multiple tools to build and organize course content in the course shell.

  • Articulate best practices regarding instructor presence in the online classroom and identify strategies to increase instructor presence.

  • Develop strategies to improve and increase communication and interaction with and between students in online courses.

  • Choose appropriate technologies for online language courses.

I was able to gain Hybrid teaching experience including setting up and administering a Hybrid course over the summer of 2020.

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy has evolved through many years of working with students from various backgrounds and age groups. One thing that is extremely important to me is to have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the classroom. I care about my students, and I want to them to feel like they are in a safe and respectful environment where they develop and thrive. Within this safe space, I want to always challenge my students to exceed their own expectations, grow, and acquire the tools necessary to become ambassadors of their institution and training. As an educator and advisor, I take my responsibilities towards my students very seriously and match my expectations of them with equal support from my side. Rather than teach at them, I aim to encourage dialogue and discussion among the students, whom I see as a community of learners and scholars. Ultimately, I want students to leave my classes equipped with the necessary tools and skills to effectively understand, reflect, and communicate (both orally and in written form). Using various different types of media in the classroom is an important part of the real-life connection I want my students to have with higher education. My goal is to make them start seeing the field for what it is: an essential and dynamic component of society. At the same time, I see teaching and learning as part of the same dynamic. The opportunity to work with such heterogeneous and diverse groups from various geographical, cultural and social backgrounds has shaped the educator that I aspire to be. Working with students has always motivated me to challenge my own generalized assumptions, beliefs, and stereotypes. It has taught me numerous lessons about tolerance and respect towards others while enabling me to expand my insights not only as an educator, but most importantly in whole as a person.
